About Us Why become a director?

There are many reasons people decide to volunteer for a not-for-profit organisation like Somerset Savings and Loans.

As a board member, you will have the opportunity to develop new and existing skills and gain experience volunteering in a small cooperative as well as the satisfaction of knowing you are making a difference to peoples’ lives.

We spoke to some of our former directors, who described why they volunteered as a board member.:

“ I decided to become a director because it felt like a great way to use my skills and experience to give something back to the community. The credit union plays such an important role across Somerset and the chance to help run it and shape its future was something I wanted to be involved with. Working with a diverse range of volunteer directors was very fulfilling and certainly helped to develop my own skills. People may be put off becoming a director because it sounds like it's a bit 'corporate'. Yes, you will be helping to run an ethical financial services business, but what's most important is your commitment, passion and common sense rather than your boardroom experience. As soon as my work commitments allow, I will certainly be looking to get involved in the credit union again and I would encourage anyone who may be interested in doing the same to make contact and have an initial conversation to find out more.”

- Former board member, Rob.

“My day job is as an in-house solicitor with an insurance company. One of my frustrations in that role is that, while I may be involved in important business projects, I don't always get to see the full picture and it was really interesting to debate practical business issues and see them from different perspectives. I was also able to contribute my own specialist knowledge to a good cause in a different context from my day job. I think that my experience with Somerset Savings and Loans has broadened my knowledge and experience and increased my confidence to offer opinions at work.”

- Former board member, Richard
